Agentic Checkout, Explained

Copilot Checkout, ChatGPT's pivot away from in-chat purchase, and Perplexity's Buy with Pro all answer the same question differently. Here's what each one actually does at the point of sale.

"Agentic checkout" isn't one thing

The phrase gets used as if every AI platform sells the same way. They don't. Microsoft Copilot completes a purchase inside the chat window. ChatGPT sends the shopper back to your store to finish the sale. Perplexity runs its own purchase flow through a separate integration. A Shopify merchant who treats these as interchangeable will configure the wrong settings for at least two of the three.

Microsoft Copilot Checkout: buy without leaving the chat

What launched

Copilot Checkout went live January 8, 2026, built on PayPal as the payment backbone. Launch partners included PayPal, Shopify, Stripe, and Etsy. The purchase panel sits inside the chat window itself. No tab switch, no redirect.

For a Shopify store, this means Copilot can complete a sale on your behalf without a shopper ever loading your storefront. Your product data, not your checkout page design, becomes the entire customer-facing experience at the moment of purchase. If your structured attributes or photos are weak, that weakness shows up inside Copilot's purchase panel directly.

ChatGPT: discovery, then a handoff

1

Late 2025: Instant Checkout launches

OpenAI introduced Instant Checkout through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, built with Stripe, starting with US Etsy sellers and expanding to more than a million Shopify merchants, including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori.

2

March 2026: OpenAI pivots

OpenAI moved away from completing purchases inside the chat, citing inflexibility in the in-chat model. ChatGPT now focuses on product discovery and recommendation, then hands the shopper off to the merchant's own checkout to complete the purchase.

3

Where it stands now

This shift moves ChatGPT toward Shopify's broader Agentic Storefronts model: the agent recommends, your store closes the sale. Your own checkout speed and mobile experience matter more here than they do on Copilot.

Practical takeaway: if ChatGPT sends you a shopper, that shopper lands on your storefront expecting the same product they just saw described. A mismatch between what ChatGPT showed and what your page shows breaks trust fast. Keep your feed and your live page in sync.

Perplexity: Buy with Pro, a separate lane

Perplexity launched "Buy with Pro" in November 2024, running through PayPal, and now supports more than 5,000 merchants. Unlike the Shopify Catalog toggle that feeds ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini at once, Perplexity's purchase integration requires its own setup. Turning on Shopify Catalog gets your products discoverable inside Perplexity's answers. It doesn't enable a purchase flow there on its own.

What this means for a Shopify catalog

01

Audit your per-platform checkout settings

Check Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts for your current enrollment status on each platform. Confirm Copilot's opt-in or opt-out matches what you intend, since auto-enrollment may have set it for you.

02

Treat product data as your checkout UI for Copilot

Since Copilot completes a sale without a storefront visit, your structured attributes, pricing accuracy, and images carry the full weight of the purchase decision. There's no second chance to win the shopper over on your own page.

03

Keep your own checkout fast for ChatGPT-driven traffic

Since ChatGPT redirects rather than completing the sale, your storefront checkout speed and mobile usability directly affect whether that referred shopper converts.

04

Set up Perplexity's integration separately if it matters to your category

Don't assume the Shopify Catalog toggle covers Perplexity's purchase flow. If Perplexity is a meaningful traffic source for your category, the separate setup is worth the time.

Three models, one underlying requirement

Copilot completes the sale for you. ChatGPT sends the shopper to you. Perplexity runs its own lane. All three depend on the same foundation: accurate, structured, current product data. Get that right once and you're positioned for whichever model a given platform settles on next, because the platforms themselves are still adjusting.
