Shopify Spring '26: What DTC Brands Actually Need to Do

Shopify shipped 150+ updates on June 17. Most target developers. Five of them change what AI agents can do with a DTC store right now.

Shopify's Spring '26 edition landed June 17 with over 150 changes across checkout, developer tooling, and AI commerce. The changelog runs long. Most updates target app developers and Plus enterprise builds. Five of them change what AI agents can do with a standard DTC store right now.

The scale of AI commerce right now

AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 7x between January 2025 and the Agentic Storefronts launch. AI-attributed orders grew 11x over the same period. Referrals from AI platforms convert at around 7%, about eight times higher than social traffic. Spring '26 opens more of that surface area. The bottleneck is catalog readiness, not platform access.

1. The Agentic Storefronts section now lives in your admin

Spring '26 moved Agentic Storefronts out of buried Marketing settings and into a dedicated section of the Shopify admin. Standard merchants find it at Settings > Marketing > Shopify Catalog. Plus merchants find it at Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts.

The standalone section adds per-platform controls that didn't exist in March. If you turned on Shopify Catalog at launch and haven't been back since, the interface looks different now. Open it and check what each platform toggle shows.

The "Allow Shopify to manage for me" setting matters. Leave it on if you want Shopify to handle platform-level configuration. Turn it off only if you plan to configure each platform yourself, because turning it off before completing manual setup can take your catalog offline across all four AI platforms at once.

2. The Knowledge Base is the most underreported feature

The Knowledge Base sits inside the Agentic Storefronts section. It's a structured set of questions about your brand: what you sell, who you sell to, what makes your products different from others in the category, how you handle returns and exchanges.

AI agents use this data to answer brand-level questions that product titles and descriptions can't cover. A shopper asking "is [Brand] good for sensitive skin?" or "does [Brand] ship to Canada?" gets a useful answer when that context exists in the Knowledge Base. Without it, the agent guesses or routes the shopper to a competitor who has better brand context indexed.

Time required

15 to 20 minutes to fill in, first pass

Most merchants haven't touched this yet. That's the gap. Shopify surfaces the Knowledge Base inside Agentic Storefronts. Answer every question, even the ones that seem obvious. Agents read structured context better than inferred context.

3. Product Disclosures, if your category needs them

Product Disclosures are structured fields for regulated product categories where AI shopping surfaces require disclosure data before recommending a product. Supplements, cosmetics with active ingredients, and certain electronics categories are the main ones affected.

If your store sells products in these categories, Shopify now has dedicated fields for that compliance data. AI agents read these fields and surface them to shoppers in the recommendation. Skip the fields and agents either omit the product or flag missing information.

Not every merchant needs to act here. Check your Agentic Storefronts section to see if Shopify has flagged any product categories on your store.

4. UCP is live and your store is already enabled

Google and Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026. Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, Stripe, Etsy, Target, and Wayfair joined as backers. UCP gives AI agents a standard language for product selection, payment, and order confirmation, without sending a shopper to a browser to navigate checkout.

Spring '26 made UCP self-serve for every Shopify merchant. Your store is UCP-enabled by default. No application, no separate configuration step.

What auto-enablement actually means

UCP exposes your checkout and product data to AI agents that act on that data. Inaccurate pricing, stale inventory, or missing product identifiers create agent-level errors, not just product page problems. An agent that reads wrong pricing and completes a purchase at that price creates a customer service problem. Default enablement means your data quality is now load-bearing.

5. Direct checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini

Spring '26 extends Shopify's Agentic Storefronts into Google AI Mode and the Gemini app. A shopper can go from a conversational query to a completed order without leaving Google's surfaces. Shopify's Catalog API feeds product data. UCP handles the checkout.

This is in early access as of Spring '26. Shopify prioritizes merchants with clean, complete product data for the rollout. Stores with missing GTINs, thin descriptions, or stale inventory get deprioritized.

What to check this week

1

Open your Agentic Storefronts admin section

Check every platform toggle. The UI changed in Spring '26 and per-platform controls now exist that weren't there in March.

2

Fill in the Knowledge Base

15 to 20 minutes on the first pass. Answer every question Shopify asks, including the ones about returns, shipping regions, and product differentiators. Agents read this when they can't find the answer in your product catalog.

3

Check for Product Disclosure flags

If Shopify has flagged any of your product categories as requiring disclosures, fill those fields before an agent surfaces your product to a shopper who expects compliance information.

4

Audit pricing and inventory accuracy

UCP exposes this data to agents that act on it. Run a quick check: pull your top 20 SKUs and confirm prices and stock levels match what's in your admin.

5

Run your ACR Score

Before more AI traffic arrives through Spring '26's new surfaces, see where your catalog readiness stands. The score takes five minutes and shows gaps across structured data, feed accuracy, and catalog architecture.
